Historical Atlas of Romanian Towns
Series A Moldavia |
Series B Wallachia |
Series C Transylvania |
The concept of the Atlas assumes that only a systematic historical analysis of all relevant factors allows us to understand the historical evolution of a town. For the first time in a large published work, the evolution of the Romanian towns is studied according to the available historical, geographical, demographic and archaeological information with the help of historical plans (some of which are rare and difficult to consult) and contemporary maps. The atlas is thus conceived as a tool for comparative and interdisciplinary research focused on the use of cartographic sources. The bilingual text facilitates the use of the publication by readers from both Romania and from abroad, the project thus contributing to the integration of the Romanian urban phenomenon in the European context. Although the atlas was designed primarily as a scientific work, its synthetic, interdisciplinary content, accompanied by numerous maps, is ideal for teaching purposes. Moreover, the atlas represents a useful monograph for the local community, offering vital data regarding the historical and geographical evolution of the town and the historical urban heritage. Finally, the atlas can be used by local authorities for urban planning, urban modernization in general and the preservation of historical vestiges.
The historical atlas is created according to the guidelines set by the International Comission for the History of Towns (Historic Towns Atlases: Urban History through Maps). Each volume contains a general text with chapters regarding the major physical and geographical aspects, the city chronicle, the demographic evolution, the morphology and phases of urban expansion, the monuments and historical descriptions, the archaeological discoveries, as well as a a list of street names. The text is accompanied by a series of digital maps derived from original historical sources (plans depicting the town in the past and today, published at different scales). The text is embellished with illustrations.
The Historical Atlas of Romanian Towns is structured in three series, corresponding to the major Romanian historical provinces.
