Vasile Ciobanu graduated from the Faculty of History and Philosophy, "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iași in 1971. In 1999, he defended at the same university his doctoral thesis, entitled Contributions to the knowledge of the history of Transylvanian Saxons. 1918-1944 (published as a book in 2001). He has been working as a historian at the Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities Sibiu since 1971. He became a senior researcher in 2000 (Scientific Researcher I). He worked as an associate assistant of history at the Faculty of History and Philology of the Institute of Higher Education Sibiu between 1975 and 1983 and as associate lecturer at the Department of History of the Faculty of Philology, History and Law, "Lucian Blaga" University of Sibiu between 1992-1994. He was a lecturer in 1994-2000 and an associate professor at the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of the Faculty of History and Heritage "Nicoale Lupu", "Lucian Blaga" University of Sibiu, since 2000. He was a member of the Scientific Board of the Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities Sibiu (1994-2018), president of the Commission for the History of Romanian Towns (2008-2018), president of the Civitas Nostra Association (2008-2018). He is Editor-in-chief of the Historia Urbana journal. He was also Executive editor of the Yearbook of the Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities (1994-2001) and is still a member of the editorial board of the Yearbook. He published 5 volumes as single author, 9 multi-author volumes, 11 coordinated (collaborative) volumes, 5 volumes containing edited documents and 77 studies in specialized journals. For his work Contributions to the knowledge of the history of the Transylvanian Saxons, 1918-1944 , published in 2002, he received the "George Barițiu" award of the Romanian Academy.
