Coordinators
Anda-Lucia Spânu, Maria-Emilia Ţiplic
The Historical Dictionary of Romanian Towns is a project that commenced several years ago and is in the process of being completed. The dictionary will be an indispensable working tool for those interested in the historical evolution of any urban settlement in Romania. The creation of this work required a sustained documentation effort and the analysis of numerous scientific studies. The presentation sheets of the 370 towns will be grouped according to the location within the three historical provinces of Romania: A. Moldavia, B. Wallachia, C. Transylvania, and then in the alphabetical order. The dictionary will also cover vanished towns or towns that have lost their urban status. Each presentation sheet will contain information on the following topics:
- the Romanian name of the town and its correspondent in other languages (Latin, German, Hungarian, Serbian, etc.);
- the geographical environment;
- a brief history, containing information about the first mention of the town and the first mention as an urban-type settlement, evolution, economy, culture, demography;
- historical monuments;
- cultural institutions and institutions of higher education;
- bibliography and peculiar data regarding a particular town (where appropriate).
